Me llamo Pau, tengo siete años y tengo autismo.

My name is Pau, I’m seven years old and I have autism.
What a strange introduction, don’t you?

When we everyday introduce ourselves to people that we don’t know, we say our name, where we live, at large where we work, but we hardly talk about on our personal situation.

When a person has autism, when the autism disable you to communicate in a standardized manner, seems to be that person must justify before everybody and every time.

Well, I’ll start again: my name is Pau, I’m seven years old and yes, I have autism!

When my parents started the project of my life, they imagined the color of hair, if I would be curly-haired, if it would be high, friendly, but never thought that a circumstance such as autism might be the word that defined me in front of other people.

In my family we are four and I’m the older of two brothers. It makes I had more dedication from my parents for a long time, and also makes me take advantage in the number of photos to my brother Andreu.

At first glance, there is nothing at all that makes me different from any child of my age, but when people are a little more time with me, realize that I need help to understanding the world around me.

I do not usually play with kids of my age cause they have trouble to understanding my routines and my preferences for playing, but my parents are in charge of  they could accept the way I am and they could understand a little more my way of relating to the world.

I like to play with the ball, to see my brother and my cousin ride a bike and mainly I really like the music.

Because I have no words, I use music to express myself when I sleep or when I watch a movie that I like.

Singing to me, it relaxes me especially when mom does, but I also like when my brother does it. Then, there is no difference between us.

Listening to my brother telling things to my parents, gives me a good laugh, and I also like to participate, in my way, in those moments.

My daily life is full of new challenges and small victories that make me proud of myself.

This year I learned to eat alone with a spoon and each time I do there are plenty of looks smiling me and deeming as a CHAMPION.

Pay attention, this adjective was not in the initial adjectives with which my parents could imagine before birth, and today I think it’s the most defines me.

I am a CHAMPION because I learned to walk, though the neurologist who treated me for the first time used the adjective incapable, and did not trust my perseverance.

I am a CHAMPION because without more thoughts, I decided for myself that music would be my media and since then my parents understand much better my wishes.

I am a CHAMPION because I’ve learned to ask, in my way, the thing I need, although the teachers of the first school that my parents took me not trust me either.

The world around me is full of noises, obstacles, images that I do not understand and yet my world is always full of music, simple gestures, and transparent looks because I do not understand the lies, or double meanings of sentences, and I don’t want learn them either

In short, that is me, Pau the champion, the fighter, the smiling one and also the child who has autism, not the autistic one.

If you ever meet me, do not shout at me; use simple words and short phrases to understand you better. We will get in contact very soon, and I assure both of us will receive a tremendous rewarding.

Imagine how you would like I treat you, so you treat me as well.

Each year, on April 2, marks the World Day to raise awareness of autism. If you like, that day can put a blue balloon at your window. I’m sure someone asks you why you do that.

Talk about me, so it will be easier for many more people to know me, understand me and help me to be a CHAMPION, that’s what I want to be.

What do you think; you’re willing to help me? Because I’m willing to give my best smile in return for your understanding, because I want you to think I’m a champion and with your help could make the world easier for me, full of music.
